{"id":150,"date":"2007-09-28T16:11:13","date_gmt":"2007-09-28T23:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/cqtwo\/2007\/09\/28\/more-on-very-light-jets-hardware-softwa"},"modified":"2007-09-28T16:11:13","modified_gmt":"2007-09-28T23:11:13","slug":"more-on-very-light-jets-hardware-software-and-networks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/cqtwo\/2007\/09\/28\/more-on-very-light-jets-hardware-software-and-networks\/","title":{"rendered":"More on Very Light Jets: Hardware, Software, and Networks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jon Udell has an interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonudell.net\/2007\/09\/15\/a-conversation-with-ed-iacobucci-about-the-reinvention-of-air-travel\/\" title=\"Ed Iacobucci interviewed by Jon Udell\">post <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/itc.conversationsnetwork.org\/shows\/detail3278.html\" title=\"Ed Iacobucci interviewed by Jon Udell\">podcast <\/a>with Ed Iacobucci of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dayjet.com\/\" title=\"DayJet\">DayJet<\/a>, an air taxi startup.\u00a0 Iacobucci, it turns out, is the founder of Citrix and led the OS\/2 team at IBM.\u00a0 DayJet is what you fantasize about during travel delays; a point-to-point small jet service that lets you skip the big hubs and go directly from your local general aviation field to the general aviation field closest to your actual destination.\u00a0 Well, what I fantasize about during travel delays.<\/p>\n<p>Udell&#8217;s post makes much of the complexity of the operations research routing problem that DayJet has to solve in order to be successful, but a <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonudell.net\/2007\/09\/21\/the-fourth-platform\/\" title=\"DayJet and Eclipse\">subsequent post<\/a> touches on the hardware issue.\u00a0 That is, DayJet needs a particular hardware &#8220;platform&#8221; &#8212; in this case, a small inexpensive jet &#8212; in addition to the software.\u00a0 The arrival of Very Light Jets (VLJs) such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eclipseaviation.com\/eclipse_500\/\" title=\"Eclipse 500 jet\">Eclipse 500<\/a> that DayJet is using is supposed to usher in this new age.<\/p>\n<p>The analogies with personal computers and the rise of networks and the Internet are not lost on either Udell or Iacobucci.\u00a0 In fact, they talk about passengers as packets, which is a little disconcerting.<\/p>\n<p>The private jet market has now taken off, if you&#8217;ll pardon the pun, outside of the US, with strong growth for fractional ownership players such as NetJets in Europe and dramatically increased orders from Asia.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;ct=res&amp;cd=1&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aia-aerospace.org%2Fstats%2Fresources%2FHoneywell2006-Forecast.pdf&amp;ei=p4f9RoSKA5GWgAOD-rTyDQ&amp;usg=AFQjCNF4OK5f0QAR8OkiepX3XSWIgkYSBA&amp;sig2=kaU8P_g0DooFAL_6TMf6rw\" title=\"Honeywell business jet survey\">Honeywell <\/a>[.ppt] projects 1,000 new jet deliveries in 2007, and over 1,300 in 2008, both records.\u00a0 Apparently, the biggest growth is forecast for the two extremes of the market; for the largest private jets, especially with inter-continental range, and for the smallest jets, including VLJs.<\/p>\n<p>But, note this tidbit from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/09\/25\/business\/25road.html?_r=1&amp;ref=business&amp;pagewanted=print&amp;oref=slogin\" title=\"NYTimes\">Joe Sharkey<\/a> in the <em>New York Times<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In a recent interview, Mr. Santulli of NetJets marveled at the vast wealth driving this growth. He also said that not all of the big long-range luxury jets, like Gulfstreams, are ferrying teams of executives across the seas.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTake a wild guess. What do you think the most common city pair for our Gulfstream fleet is?\u201d he asked.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNew York to L.A.?\u201d I replied.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNot even close.
