{"id":1036,"date":"2010-09-14T22:22:25","date_gmt":"2010-09-15T05:22:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/cqtwo\/?p=1036"},"modified":"2011-01-04T20:36:31","modified_gmt":"2011-01-05T03:36:31","slug":"epistle-to-quakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/cqtwo\/2010\/09\/14\/epistle-to-quakers\/","title":{"rendered":"Epistle To Quakers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/2\/2d\/Thomas_Paine.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"161\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Thomas Paine\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_paine\">Thomas Paine<\/a> is very entertaining to read, even more than two hundred years on. \u00a0In his &#8220;<a title=\"Epistle to Quakers\" href=\"http:\/\/ideas.repec.org\/h\/hay\/hetcha\/paine1908-6.html\">Epistle to Quakers<\/a>&#8221; (sometimes appended to <em>Common Sense<\/em>), Paine excoriates the Quakers for, first, mixing religion and politics; then for not supporting the cause of independence from England; and, finally, for claiming biblical authority for their passive stance towards the Crown. \u00a0&#8220;What a slap in the face!&#8221; he says. \u00a0Literally &#8212; that&#8217;s exactly what he says: &#8220;What a slap in the face is here!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And then, at the very of the pamphlet, this little gem: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And here, without anger or resentment I bid you farewell.
