In the Catholic ecclesiastical hierarchy, there are four patriarchs besides the patriarch of Rome or the West (i.e., the Pope).  These are the patriarchs of Jerusalem, Lisbon, Venice, and the East Indies (i.e., Goa).  These titles don’t have any special distinction anymore except for the right to march at the head of papal processions.  So in the recent attack on Pope Benedict I thought patriarchs might also have been injured.  But that wasn’t the case; instead, the French Cardinal Etxegaray, part of the curia, was taken to a hospital with a broken hip and leg.

In Patrick Leigh Fermor’s incomparable A Time of Gifts, he takes the occasion of his 1933 visit to Dürnstein castle in Austria as an opportunity to recount the story of Richard the Lionheart‘s imprisonment there in 1193.
