{"id":33,"date":"2014-02-24T04:22:57","date_gmt":"2014-02-24T04:22:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/copyrightosc\/?page_id=33"},"modified":"2017-02-23T04:46:25","modified_gmt":"2017-02-23T04:46:25","slug":"about-fair-use-week","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/copyrightosc\/about-fair-use-week\/","title":{"rendered":"About Fair Use Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cFair Use Week\u201d idea was first proposed on the Fair Use Allies listserv. \u00a0It was an outgrowth of <strong>the <\/strong><strong>Library Code of Best Practices Capstone Event<\/strong>, held in March 2013, celebrating the development and promulgation of ARL\u2019s <em>Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Academic and Research Libraries<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone had time to develop and launch a program, but I kept the idea alive for a smaller beta-launch at Harvard.<\/p>\n<p>I launched the 1st Annual Fair Use Week in February 2014 with a week of activities.<\/p>\n<p>After its success, the\u00a0Association of Research Libraries (ARL)\u00a0teamed up with me to help organize the 2nd Annual\u00a0Fair Use Week to promote participation among a broader set of institutions. I thank ARL for its gracious support!<\/p>\n<p>I would also like to thank <strong>Pia M. Hunter<\/strong> (University of Illinois at Chicago Library) and <strong>Brandon Butler<\/strong> (then Practitioner-in-Residence at Glushko Samuelson IP Clinic, American University, Washington College of Law) who were the originators of the valiant vision to host week-long fair use celebration. I hope our celebration continues to match part of your vision!<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, <strong>Emily Kilcer<\/strong>, Project Coordinator at the Office for Scholarly Communication, and overall expert in making everything organized, trouble-free, and fun, is\u00a0the key ally who really brings\u00a0celebration together. \u00a0Each year, the entire week would fail\u00a0without her expertise &#8211; Many thanks!<\/p>\n<p>As I stated in 2014<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hopefully, should this inaugural <strong>Fair Use Week<\/strong> at Harvard be successful, we can look forward to a national launch from multiple universities, colleges, libraries, and other institutions next year!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I am happy to say that we have reached that goal and expanded Fair Use Week above and beyond my\u00a0initial vision.<\/p>\n<p>Many thanks,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Kyle K.
