{"id":4034,"date":"2012-07-20T13:57:57","date_gmt":"2012-07-20T17:57:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/collegeadmissionsstudentblog\/?p=4034"},"modified":"2012-07-24T16:43:22","modified_gmt":"2012-07-24T20:43:22","slug":"guest-blog-summer-is-for-service-at-harvard-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/collegeadmissionsstudentblog\/2012\/07\/20\/guest-blog-summer-is-for-service-at-harvard-college\/","title":{"rendered":"Guest Blog: Summer is for Service at Harvard College"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Gene Corbin, Assistant Dean of Harvard College for Public Service<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over 500 students are devoting their summer breaks to serving others and tackling critical social issues through amazing experiences funded by public service organizations at Harvard College.\u00a0 Such opportunities abound and include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>serving with nonprofit organizations in cities across the country through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpic.fas.harvard.edu\/icb\/icb.do\">Center for Public Interest Careers<\/a> (CPIC);<\/li>\n<li>making important contributions to government and public policy in internships provided by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iop.harvard.edu\/\">Institute of Politics<\/a> (IOP) \u2013 including numerous positions in Washington DC;<\/li>\n<li>and providing summer camps for youth living in underserved communities in Boston through the <a href=\"http:\/\/pbha.org\/\">Phillips Brooks House Association<\/a> (PBHA).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, many students apply to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocs.fas.harvard.edu\/\">Office of Career Services<\/a> for fellowships or grants to fund their own public service pursuits \u2013 including projects throughout the world made possible by<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocs.fas.harvard.edu\/students\/summer_international_experience_funding_drieg.htm\"> David Rockefeller International Experience Grants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although only a drop in the bucket of the good work students are doing this summer, below are three examples:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>T<\/strong><strong>yrell Dixon <\/strong>is a rising Senior from Baltimore.\u00a0 Thanks to the Center for Public Interest Careers, Tyrell is working at the Legal Aid Society\u2019s Juvenile Justice Department in New York City this summer. Through interacting with clients, shadowing attorneys,\u00a0 sitting-in on court cases, and forging his own personal relationships with clients and attorneys, Tyrell is experiencing first-hand the way the law impacts individual lives.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/collegeadmissionsstudentblog\/files\/2012\/07\/tyrell.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4035 aligncenter\" title=\"Rising Senior Tyrell Dixon\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/collegeadmissionsstudentblog\/files\/2012\/07\/tyrell.jpg\" alt=\"Rising Senior Tyrell Dixon\" width=\"210\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Julia Konrad<\/strong> is a rising Senior from New York City.\u00a0 She received a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iop.harvard.edu\/Political-Internships-Career-Services\/Director%E2%80%99s-Internship-Program\/\"> Director\u2019s Internship from the Institute of Politics<\/a> (IOP) to work for the US Department of Education in Secretary Arne Duncan\u2019s Office.\u00a0 Julia is having an unbelievable summer helping plan many important events \u2013 including the 30<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary of\u00a0 Title IX where she brought people together to celebrate this landmark amendment for gender equality including Secretary Arne Duncan (the slightly taller person next to Julia in the photo).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meredith Arra<\/strong> is a rising Sophomore from Georgia.\u00a0 She became involved in public service immediately upon arriving at Harvard College \u2013 beginning with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hcs.harvard.edu\/~fup\/\">First Year Urban Program<\/a>.\u00a0 Meredith is devoting her summer to teaching 6 and 7 year-old youth in the Phillips Brooks House Association\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/community.harvard.edu\/programs\/chinatown-adventure-chad\">(PBHA) Chinatown Adventure Camp<\/a> \u2013 one of the 12 camps in PBHA\u2019s Summer Urban Program.\u00a0 She\u2019s focusing her efforts on healthy living and nutrition to combat obesity.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4069\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a the opportunity to benefit from life-changing relationships and experiences.\u00a0 Every fall, I have countless conversations with students who have new insights about themselves and what they want to do with their lives \u2013 including many students who return motivated to pursue a public interest career.<\/p>\n<p>More information on the opportunities Tyler, Julia, and Meredith pursued, and many
