We&#8217;re now close to our goal of 100,000 signatures, and, with your help, we hope to surpass it by a longshot and deliver the petition to Congress. <\/P><br \/>\n<P><A href=\"http:\/\/www.eff.org\/IP\/P2P\/RIAAatTWO_FINAL.pdf\">After over 18,000 lawsuits and counting<\/A>, file sharing has continued to increase rapidly. Meanwhile, music fans, like <A href=\"http:\/\/news.com.com\/RIAA+settles+with+12-year-old+girl\/2100-1027_3-5073717.html\">12 year-old Brittany LaHara<\/A>, college student <A href=\"http:\/\/www-tech.mit.edu\/V126\/N15\/RIAA1506.html\">Cassi Hunt<\/A>, and parent of five <A href=\"http:\/\/www.eff.org\/IP\/P2P\/RIAAatTWO_FINAL.pdf\">Cecilia Gonzalez<\/A>, are being forced to pay thousands of dollars they do not have to settle RIAA-member lawsuits, and many other <A href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/news.ars\/post\/20060424-6662.html\">innocent individuals<\/A> are being caught in the crossfire. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>But resistance to this shameful crusade is growing. Just this week, <A href=\"http:\/\/www.musiccreators.ca\/\">many top Canadian musical artists<\/A>, including Barenaked Ladies and Avril Lavigne, called the lawsuits &#8220;destructive and hypocritical,&#8221; and a court <A href=\"http:\/\/recordingindustryvspeople.blogspot.com\/2006\/04\/riaa-case-against-14-year-old-brittany.html\">threw out<\/A> a lawsuit against 14 year-old Brittany Chan. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>It&#8217;s time for Congress to join the chorus of opposition and stop kowtowing to the content cartel. <A href=\"http:\/\/www.eff.org\/share\/petition\/\">Sign the petition<\/A>, and <A href=\"http:\/\/www.eff.org\/support\/\">donate to EFF<\/A> to <A href=\"http:\/\/www.eff.org\/share\/?f=collective_lic_wp.html\">support a better way forward.<\/A><\/P><br \/>\n<P>(Cross posted at <A href=\"http:\/www.eff.org\/deeplinks\">Deep Links<\/A>)<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In response to the RIAA&#8217;s irrational lawsuit campaign against the tens of millions of American P2P users, EFF set up a petition asking Congress to stop the madness and support ways for artists to get paid without fans getting sued.
