You feel the drain<br \/>\nOf energy, but thought and sight remain:<\/p>\n<p>Enhanced, in fact. When did you ever see<br \/>\nSo much sweet beauty as when fine rain falls<br \/>\nOn that small tree<br \/>\nAnd saturates your brick back garden walls,<br \/>\nSo many Amber Rooms and mirror halls?<\/p>\n<p>Ever more lavish as the dusk descends<br \/>\nThis glistening illuminates the air.<br \/>\nIt never ends.<br \/>\nWhenever the rain comes it will be there,<br \/>\nBeyond my time, but now I take my share.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter\u2019s choice, the maple tree is new.<br \/>\nCome autumn and its leaves will turn to flame.<br \/>\nWhat I must do<br \/>\nIs live to see that.<br \/>\nThat will end the game<br \/>\nFor me, though life continues all the same:<\/p>\n<p>Filling the double doors to bathe my eyes,<br \/>\nA final flood of colors will live on<br \/>\nAs my mind dies,<br \/>\nBurned by my vision of a world that shone<br \/>\nSo brightly at the last, and then was gone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Japanese Maple By Clive James Your death, near now, is of an easy sort.
