{"id":4096,"date":"2005-03-28T15:00:07","date_gmt":"2005-03-28T19:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/httpblogslawharvardeduceerock4\/2005\/03\/28\/film-geek-love"},"modified":"2005-03-28T15:00:07","modified_gmt":"2005-03-28T19:00:07","slug":"film-geek-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ceerock\/2005\/03\/28\/film-geek-love\/","title":{"rendered":"Film Geek Love"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a2976'><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/03\/28\/movies\/28fan.html?th&amp;emc=th\">&#8220;eligible cinephile&#8221;<\/a> states the problem with &#8220;movie dates&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px; font-style: italic;\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a problem with going out with film buffs,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Any<br \/>\ntime you share an interest with somebody, and you make that the<br \/>\nstarting point for getting to know the person, you can never be sure &#8211;<br \/>\nunless you do something drastic, like trying to kiss them &#8211; you can<br \/>\nnever be sure if they simply want to see the film in your company, or<br \/>\nif they find you attractive and want you to find them attractive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px; font-style: italic;\">A<br \/>\nfilm date, in his view, is awkward by its very nature. &#8220;To like going<br \/>\nto films, not unlike liking to read, involves a certain cultivation of<br \/>\nsolitude,&#8221; he observed. &#8220;Even if you&#8217;re on a date &#8211; unless you&#8217;re with<br \/>\none of these idiots who wants to hold your hand through the whole film<br \/>\n&#8211; you don&#8217;t interact with the other person during the film. Which can<br \/>\nbe very frustrating to some people. They think they&#8217;ve spent two hours<br \/>\nwith you when all they&#8217;ve done is sit next to you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I solve this problem by rarely going to the movies any more.
