Meeting all the new people at the\u00a0lunch event on Tuesday made me realize how Berkman is some sort of intellectual hub of the Internet. Also, I am often surprised\u00a0 by how many know about Berkman and how many influential digerati are or have passed\u00a0 by Berkman at some point.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a title=\"All roads lead to Rome by Greenery, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/greenery\/3245474276\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3095\/3245474276_41488bf488_m.jpg\" alt=\"All roads lead to Rome\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Photo by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/greenery\/3245474276\/\">Greenery<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The diversity of backgrounds among the Berkmanites is also very telling of the type of people who are attracted to building and understanding the on-line world. Nicholas Negroponte once described the Media Lab as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/blogs\/archives\/63123\">place for misfits<\/a> and I think Berkman is another one of those places. We <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.media.mit.edu\/2011\/09\/social-computing-at-media-lab.html\">need more<\/a> places like these, places willing to host people unbounded by specific disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>But Berkman, like the Media Lab, is a transitional spaces for a lot of people. Where can these misfits go afterwards? I would like to know the answer to that. In the meanwhile, as I was trying to find a photo to accompany this post, I searched for\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/search\/?l=cc&amp;mt=all&amp;adv=1&amp;w=all&amp;q=misfit&amp;m=text#page=13\">&#8220;misfit&#8221; on Flickr<\/a> and I got a lot of pictures of cats!\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zi8VTeDHjcM\">Coincidence<\/a>?
