{"id":59,"date":"2005-09-30T12:18:28","date_gmt":"2005-09-30T16:18:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/anderkoo\/2005\/09\/30\/restoring-the-longfellow-bridge-or-a"},"modified":"2005-09-30T12:18:28","modified_gmt":"2005-09-30T16:18:28","slug":"restoring-the-longfellow-bridge-or-activist-podcasting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/anderkoo\/2005\/09\/restoring-the-longfellow-bridge-or-activist-podcasting\/","title":{"rendered":"Restoring the Longfellow Bridge, or, Activist Podcasting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a400'><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A week ago I attended a Mass Highway presentation on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhd.state.ma.us\/LongfellowBridge\">restoration of the Longfellow Bridge<\/a>, which I attended representing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massbike.org\/mbmb\/\">Metro-Boston chapter<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massbike.com\">MassBike<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe Longfellow Bridge is a vital connector in Greater Boston&#8217;s bicycle<br \/>\ninfrastructure: back in July we had done a petition drive on the<br \/>\nBoston-bound side of the bridge during the morning rushhour and<br \/>\ncollected 81 signatures in 90 minutes for infrastructure improvements<br \/>\non the bridge for cyclists (we counted double that number pedaling in<br \/>\nfrom the Cambridge side of the bridge, many from farther away than<br \/>\nCambridge or Somerville).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.giant-squid-audio-lab.com\/gs\/gs-mono1.htm\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.giant-squid-audio-lab.com\/gs\/mic%20scans\/omni-mono.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At<br \/>\nthe presentation, bicycle advocates were, I daresay, strongly<br \/>\nrepresented in the audience. Many who were commenting on behalf of<br \/>\nother interests, including environmental and artistic causes, also<br \/>\nthrew in a good word for bicycles. (The other main interest group in<br \/>\nattendance were comprised of Beacon Hill \/ Back Bay abutters who were<br \/>\nprimarily interested in boosting their land value). At one point I had<br \/>\nasked a question of the chief engineer of the project, who made an<br \/>\nunequivocally strong statement in support of planning for bicycles on<br \/>\nthe Longfellow Bridge.\n<\/p>\n<p>I suddenly realized that I should have brought my iRiver, which<br \/>\nbased on my research seemed to be the best balance between price and<br \/>\nrecording quality (particularly for <a href=\"http:\/\/reinventedsoftware.com\/blog\/2005\/04\/20\/iriver-audio-review-notes\/\">podcasting<\/a>).<br \/>\nI had used it the week before to record part of a training session<br \/>\nusing just the built-in speaker, which was acceptable in quality but<br \/>\nnot great, so the next day I immediately bought <a href=\"http:\/\/www.giant-squid-audio-lab.com\/gs\/gs-mono1.htm\">this lapel microphone<\/a>, with the thought that although a more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.electrovoice.com\/Electrovoice3\/products.nsf\/pages\/635A\">professional journalist&#8217;s mike<\/a><br \/>\nmight be better in quality, I would never bother to haul it around. I<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t plan on switching to podcast format (heck, it&#8217;s hard enough to<br \/>\nremember to blog more than once monthly!) but I&#8217;ve been thinking more<br \/>\nabout podcasting as a tool for activists.
