Well, perhaps &#8220;pleasures&#8221; is not quite the<br \/>\nword. In any event, I am now finally vindicated with the kickoff of Bitter Melon Week,<br \/>\na combination food festival &#8211; performance art event taking place in<br \/>\nBoston&#8217;s South End. Asian and Gringo restaurants alike are encouraged<br \/>\nto incorporate bitter melon, which is grown in community gardens in the<br \/>\nneighborhood, into their menus.<br \/>\nEven dogs will have their own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/ae\/food\/articles\/2005\/07\/20\/bitter_melon_enlists_a_neighborhood\/\">bitter melon dish<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p> The event is actually the culminating event in a year-long<br \/>\ncommunity-exploration effort intended to bring the South End together.<br \/>\nAs the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bittermelon.org\/Bitter_Melon_Week.htm\">official website<\/a> proclaims, &#8220;Unity through bitterness!&#8221; But whether the event develops real roots or ends up being a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklydig.com\/index.cfm\/fuseaction\/article.view\/issueID\/89441529-6275-4596-8ad4-002b740f11ad\/articleID\/264d92b1-056f-4ea6-8db2-24f05b2e1ec6\/nodeID\/b3d60ce8-3352-4899-b18e-4dfe898f9cef\">one-off half-joke<\/a> remains to be seen.
