Not to be star-struck, but I did get to shake the hand of our future First Spouse! She shared with us how kids call her husband, in one word: “Barackobama.”<\/p>\n
I first saw her speak in Concord, NH, and began at that moment to imagine her in that role. After 8 years not seeing very much of the retiring Laura Bush, it will be quite something to have a dynamo in the East Wing again. (Yes, I do consider Hillary Clinton a model First Spouse). The volunteers were so excited to meet her — especially many of the women, and even more particularly the African-American women. It’s interesting how much more complex issues of gender and race play out in real life than in the media, where somehow “women” support Clinton and “blacks” support Obama. That’s definitely not true in the individual case, and even when it is, it’s never quite as simple as “Oh yeah, I support him, he’s black!”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Michelle Obama is making her way through the office right now, shaking hands and pumping up the troops.
