{"id":20,"date":"2005-02-10T16:51:12","date_gmt":"2005-02-10T20:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/anderkoo\/2005\/02\/10\/um-what-was-i-just-doing\/"},"modified":"2005-02-10T16:51:12","modified_gmt":"2005-02-10T20:51:12","slug":"um-what-was-i-just-doing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/anderkoo\/2005\/02\/um-what-was-i-just-doing\/","title":{"rendered":"um, what was I just doing?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a310'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=U&amp;start=6&amp;q=http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/weekend\/story\/0,3605,985375,00.html&amp;e=9901\">Ironically<\/a>, I was in the midst of writing a strategic planning document when an email from my weekly <a href=\"http:\/\/tech.nytimes.com\/pages\/technology\/circuits\/index.html\">Circuits<\/a> email arrived from the New York Times, alerting to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/02\/10\/technology\/circuits\/10info.html\">must-read article<\/a> about, well, keeping yourself focused on work and not getting distracted. So of course I put down the document and read it!<\/p>\n<p>Recently I stumbled upon Marc Prensky&#8217;s concept of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=U&amp;start=1&amp;q=http:\/\/www.marcprensky.com\/writing\/Prensky%2520-%2520Digital%2520Natives,%2520Digital%2520Immigrants%2520-%2520Part1.pdf&amp;e=9901\">Digital Immigrant<\/a>.<br \/>\nI finally understood the power of generation gaps when I caught myself<br \/>\nfrowning on some of the behaviors that mark &#8220;Digital Natives,&#8221;<br \/>\nespecially extreme multi-tasking. After all, I was raised to believe<br \/>\nthat when you do your homework, the TV, radio, and everything else<br \/>\ndistracting are <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">off<\/span>. As a consequence, perhaps I am especially vulnerable to distraction now that I operate in an the infinitely-networked world.\n<\/p>\n<p>When kids are listening to music and IM&#8217;ing their friends while<br \/>\nwriting term papers, are they also learning the meta-skill of<br \/>\nconcentration under distraction?
