{"id":173,"date":"2004-07-22T17:49:33","date_gmt":"2004-07-22T21:49:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/anderkoo\/2004\/07\/22\/whats-opera-downtown\/"},"modified":"2004-07-22T17:49:33","modified_gmt":"2004-07-22T21:49:33","slug":"whats-opera-downtown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/anderkoo\/2004\/07\/whats-opera-downtown\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s Opera, Downtown?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a184'><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"thin solid rgb(236, 236, 236); margin: 0pt 0pt 1em 1em; padding: 0.5em; float: right; font-size: smaller; width: 75px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anderkoo.com\/photos_local?wid=153&amp;func=viewSubmission&amp;sid=110\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.anderkoo.com\/uploads\/153\/110\/thumb-P1010007.JPG\" alt=\"Boston Opera House entrance\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Opera House offers an open door<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The<br \/>\nBoston Opera House re-opened its doors today, and natty yuppies<br \/>\nand families will be swarming these once-quiet streets around 7pm every night.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s<br \/>\nquite a change for the<br \/>\nneighborhood near my office, whether you call it the Theater District,<br \/>\nDowntown Crossing, the Ladder District, or even the Combat Zone.<br \/>\n(Currently, the streetlamp banners proclaim it &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.anderkoo.com\/photos_local?func=viewSubmission&amp;sid=112&amp;wid=153\">Boston&#8217;s Historic Theatre District &#8212; More than Great Theater!<\/a>&#8221;<br \/>\nProbably because &#8220;Theatre&#8221; is different than &#8220;Theater&#8221;). I remember<br \/>\nthat when I first came to Boston in 1993, Downtown Crossing wasn&#8217;t a<br \/>\nsavory&nbsp; place after 6pm. Now, at least on the Washington Street<br \/>\nside of things, it&#8217;s almost convivial. I remember strolling to the T<br \/>\nstop with co-workers after movie-and-a-dinner (&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/printable\/?critics\/040712crat_atlarge\">De-Lovely<\/a>&#8221; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phohoa.com\/\">Vietnamese<\/a>)<br \/>\nat around 8pm, and they were remarking that when we first moved into<br \/>\nour office location, some were concerned about safety when leaving<br \/>\nafter rush hour.\n<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the area is still a hodgepodge of Filenes, $1 stores, the<br \/>\nLoews hangarplex, porn shops, trendy clubs, and the Asian restaurants<br \/>\npeople go to after all of the above.
