(Over to the right you can see Rachel shouting herself<br \/>\nhoarse).<\/p>\n<p>This<br \/>\nyear I<br \/>\nnoticed some pretty poor behavior on the part of some spectators, and<br \/>\nas someone who&#8217;s run a marathon (albeit, only one), I thought it would<br \/>\nbe a good thing to post the following:<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/anderkoo\/boston2004rachel.jpg\" width=\"219\" height=\"207\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>Marathon<br \/>\nSpectator&#8217;s<br \/>\nEtiquette Guide<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Don&#8217;t<br \/>\n<\/span>occupy the runners&#8217; lane, even if it is wicked crowded and<br \/>\nyou<br \/>\ncan&#8217;t get a great view. Runners do not appreciate spectators as<br \/>\nobstacles.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Don&#8217;t<\/span><br \/>\nhand out inappropriate food or drinks (I saw some little girls giving<br \/>\nout Reeses&#8217; Peanut Butter Cups two years ago, maybe because it was funny<br \/>\nseeing duped<br \/>\nrunners spitting them out?)<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"thin solid rgb(204, 204, 204); float: right; width: 250px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/anderkoo\/boston2004spectator.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/anderkoo\/boston2004spectator.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\"><\/a><br \/>There&#8217;s a<br \/>\nfine line between<br \/>\nencouragement and heckling<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Don&#8217;t<br \/>\n<\/span>tell people &#8220;Just two miles more!&#8221;, as helpful as that may<br \/>\nseem.<br \/>\nYou&#8217;re probably wrong (I remember hearing &#8220;Just two more miles&#8221; for<br \/>\nabout a mile), and that&#8217;s pretty discouraging when you&#8217;re<br \/>\nnear the end of the race.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Don&#8217;t<\/span> urge walkers to start<br \/>\nrunning again. There&#8217;s probably a good reason<br \/>\nwhy they have stopped to take a breather. The runners aren&#8217;t there for<br \/>\nyour amusement &#8212; if they need to take a break, let them. Try saying<br \/>\nsomething like &#8220;Great race!&#8221; or &#8220;You&#8217;re looking great!&#8221;<br \/>\ninstead.<\/li>\n<li>Despite all this, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">DO <\/span>come<br \/>\nout and support the runners! Even in a race like Boston there are<br \/>\nstill first-time marathoners who really could use the encouragement.<br \/>\nEspecially come after the front-runners have already gone by, because<br \/>\nit&#8217;s the folks near the middle to end of the pack who need the<br \/>\nencouragement &#8212; plus you&#8217;ll get a better view after the crowds thin<br \/>\nout.\n <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Oh &#8212; and two tips for<br \/>\nrunners:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If you&#8217;re going to put your<br \/>\nname on your jersey,<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">DON&#8217;T <\/span>wear<br \/>\nheadphones so you can&#8217;t hear us cheer for you. What&#8217;s the<br \/>\npoint?<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8230; <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">wear those Band-aids<\/span>. You know what I&#8217;m talking<br \/>\nabout.\n <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(OK, so this is a few days late).
