{"id":103,"date":"2004-03-07T13:48:20","date_gmt":"2004-03-07T17:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/anderkoo\/2004\/03\/07\/dilbert-big-fat-waste-of-space\/"},"modified":"2004-03-07T13:48:20","modified_gmt":"2004-03-07T17:48:20","slug":"dilbert-big-fat-waste-of-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/anderkoo\/2004\/03\/dilbert-big-fat-waste-of-space\/","title":{"rendered":"Dilbert = Big Fat Waste of Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a42'><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back in college, a friend of mine who used to sketch &#8220;I, Argus Aardvark&#8221; for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/\">Harvard Crimson<\/a><br \/>\nfigured out why Dilbert&#8217;s Sunday strips suck harder than they do the<br \/>\nrest of the week: they&#8217;re basically a 4-panel strip with 4 filler<br \/>\npanels to get them into standard Sunday format.<\/p>\n<p>Try this sometime: Cut out every other panel from a Sunday Dilbert.<br \/>\nSame strip &#8212; better, in fact &#8212; for half the price. (In the case of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dilbert.com\/comics\/dilbert\/archive\/images\/dilbert2004032348581.jpg\">today&#8217;s<\/a>, snip panels 1, 3, 6, and 7). Why can&#8217;t Adams<br \/>\ntake only what he needs, one row, the way <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comics.com\/comics\/getfuzzy\/\">Get Fuzzy<\/a> does? I guess Breathed wasn&#8217;t completely right about the <a href=\"http:\/\/avclub.theonion.com\/avclub3728\/avfeature_3728.html\">future of the comics<\/a>: more page share = better marketing for the merchandising = more profits for the syndicate.<\/p>\n<p>Watterson was absolutely right in bucking the constraints of the<br \/>\nSunday pages. Today a handful (but sadly, only a handful) of strips<br \/>\nlike <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingfeatures.com\/features\/comics\/zits\/aboutMaina.php\">Zits<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucomics.com\/nonsequitur\/\">Non Sequitur<\/a><br \/>\nhave benefited from his rebellion. Too bad, on the flip side, we can&#8217;t<br \/>\nshove Dilbert back into the smaller amount of space he actually<br \/>\ndeserves. <\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Coincidence of the day:<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/images.ucomics.com\/comics\/ga\/2004\/ga040321.gif\">Garfield<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grimmy.com\/images\/2004\/MGG032104.gif\">Mother Goose &amp; Grimm<\/a> have very different takes on the pet-owner question, &#8220;Do you love me?&#8221; Not to belabor my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.badmouth.net\/archives\/000006.php\">Garfield-bashing<\/a>,<br \/>\nbut Jim Davis, or whoever\/whatever&#8217;s responsible for that waste of<br \/>\ncolor ink, can&#8217;t even keep his characters in-character. (Perhaps <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">not <\/span>a coincidence?
