{"id":2,"date":"2016-03-17T21:12:29","date_gmt":"2016-03-17T21:12:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2016-05-04T15:15:14","modified_gmt":"2016-05-04T15:15:14","slug":"sample-page","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/","title":{"rendered":"The Human Opera"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I think the phrase Professor Asani, head of the Islamic Studies Department at Harvard, used most in his class was, \u201cThe only way to know God is through love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remind myself of this on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>God is beyond reason.<\/p>\n<p>But here I am studying at the Harvard Divinity School.\u00a0 I\u2019m tearing apart sacred texts, analyzing, criticizing, comparing.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking at religion in the context of history and power structures.<\/p>\n<p>Religion has played some pretty good roles and some pretty evil roles in history.\u00a0 Sometimes what appears to be religion is actually not.\u00a0 It&#8217;s wealth, power, greed.<\/p>\n<p>So all this knowledge, is it helping me get closer to God?<\/p>\n<p>I honestly don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I do know a dose of reason + empathy can help get over stumbling blocks.<\/p>\n<p>But the key, is that, \u201cWe can only know God through love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, love is what brings on the mystery of faith no?\u00a0 What is love and how do we possess it? Love is really the glue that keeps humanity together.\u00a0 And where does love come from?<\/p>\n<p>For me that answer is God.<\/p>\n<p>The most important learning for me this year was that all religion has equal justification.<\/p>\n<p><em>God has no religion. &#8211; Ghandi<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Man made religion.\u00a0 Jesus didn&#8217;t call himself a Christian.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brendabancel_bbphotos-1624-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"brendabancel_bbphotos-1624\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brendabancel_bbphotos-1624-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brendabancel_bbphotos-1624-768x523.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brendabancel_bbphotos-1624-441x300.jpg 441w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brendabancel_bbphotos-1624.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And if Muhammad ever called himself a Muslim, it was only because the term translates into, &#8220;One who submits to God&#8221;.\u00a0 Again, groups of people turned &#8220;Islam&#8221; (meaning submission to God) into a group of people, an ideology.\u00a0 Because really, if we are practicing faith, aren&#8217;t we all Muslims?\u00a0 In the true translation, we are submitting to God.\u00a0 It never used to identify us as a &#8220;type&#8221; of religious practicing person, but as an action.<\/p>\n<p>We all have our reasons to believe, which are compounded when you add our faith.\u00a0 As a child you are taught to believe in one faith, and anything outside your own is, \u201cthe other\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ghandi said, \u201cReal struggle that democracy must wage is a struggle within the individual self, between the urge to dominate and defile the other.\u00a0 Willingness to live respectfully on terms of compassion and equality with all the vulnerability that life entails.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We need to humanize the other, no matter who the other is.<\/p>\n<p><em>An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind. &#8211; Ghandi<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I took this class on Islam, because I didn&#8217;t understand it.\u00a0 And quite honestly, I was a bit fearful of it.\u00a0 When there is terror in the world and they are saying it is, &#8220;in the name of Islam,&#8221; I wanted to know what that meant.<\/p>\n<p>The first day of class, Professor Asani wrote this on the board, &#8220;Why do they hate us?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked us who is the THEY and who is the US.\u00a0 The class was able to come up with many different versions of &#8220;they&#8221; vs. &#8220;us&#8221;.\u00a0 We have become so polarized. something that happens with a clash of ignorances.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-114\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-2194-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"brenda_bancel-2194-2\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-2194-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-2194-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-2194-2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-2194-2-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When Trump talks about an entire religious &#8220;group&#8221; as something he would ban, this becomes dangerous because we make them the &#8220;other&#8221;.\u00a0 Professor Asani wisely taught us, &#8220;We visualize that Islam has agency.\u00a0 But Islam is neither peaceful or violent.\u00a0 PEOPLE are.\u00a0 Islam does not have agency.&#8221;\u00a0 We cannot use religion as an exclusive lens.<\/p>\n<p>I think as Americans, we are really bad with other cultures and languages.\u00a0 We tend to think that we are the best and the rest of the world should be like us.\u00a0 We are terrible at languages compared to other countries in the world.<\/p>\n<p>One of the reasons Islam is also not fully understood, is that the Qur&#8217;an needs to be read in Arabic.\u00a0 When Christians went to evangelize around the world, they translated the bible.\u00a0 In Islam, they open Arabic schools.\u00a0 The Qur&#8217;an is said to be the perfect poem.\u00a0 It is very difficult to translate, as the poem loses it&#8217;s flow and rhythm, It is meant to be recited.\u00a0 Arabic is not scary, it is just another language which was born in a different culture.\u00a0 Allah is Arabic for God.\u00a0 If you want to talk about God in Arabic, you say, Allah.<\/p>\n<p>But many of the ideas in the Qur&#8217;an are the same;\u00a0 Love your neighbor, forgive, show compassion, love God.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0These are the big themes in the Qur&#8217;an.\u00a0 There are more texts on the Virgin Mary in the Qur&#8217;an than in the bible. Some people call the Qur&#8217;an the book of love.<\/p>\n<p>I loved learning how important calligraphy and text is to their culture.\u00a0 I learned that images of God, Muhammad and the Prophets are forbidden (mainly in Sunni Islam, Shia are more lax).\u00a0 The idea is to not have a human face on something so all powerful.\u00a0 This makes the text and calligraphy even more important.\u00a0 The recitation of the Qur&#8217;an is sacred.\u00a0 So where Christians have a lot of iconography, Islam relies on the recitations and the text to bring to life their faith in God.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-113\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-2077-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"brenda_bancel-2077-2\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-2077-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-2077-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-2077-2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-2077-2-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I also was reassured by this text in the Qur&#8217;an:<\/p>\n<p>5:32\u00a0 Whoever killeth a human being.. it shall be as if he had killed all mankind, and who so saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he saved the life of all mankind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I highly recommend reading the Introduction to the book, &#8220;Approaching the Qur&#8217;an&#8221; by Michael Sells.\u00a0 His Introduction explains many things about Islam where in just a few pages, you will have a great basis of what the religion is about.<\/p>\n<p>There are so many good and beautiful things that religion can do in people, for people and to unify people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But most important is that we need to learn to hold our differences tenderly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are not a homogenous society.\u00a0 Sometimes, we may not agree, but we need to sit with our discomfort.\u00a0 We need to learn to deal deeply with our differences.\u00a0 Differences make us rich.\u00a0 We should celebrate them.\u00a0 If we equalize and homogenize, we lose them.\u00a0 We need to share in this collective responsibility to get along.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s all try to dilute misery in the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-110\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-3521-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"brenda_bancel-3521\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-3521-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-3521-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-3521-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-3521-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As for me, the reason I am writing this blog is because these words I too, need to hear.\u00a0 I&#8217;m on this journey too.\u00a0 I am not yet the person that I want to be.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0I am seeking, I am striving.\u00a0 I am in it with all my heart. \u2013 Vincent Van Gogh.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nOne day in class we were talking about Muhammad&#8217;s night journey and Professor Asani called it, \u201cThe Human Opera\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-108\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-9582-1-191x300.jpg\" alt=\"brenda_bancel-9582\" width=\"191\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-9582-1-191x300.jpg 191w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-9582-1-768x1204.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/allweneedislove\/files\/2016\/03\/brenda_bancel-9582-1-653x1024.jpg 653w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 191px) 100vw, 191px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We are a human opera aren\u2019t we?\u00a0 We love, we laugh, we cry, we lose people, we have pain, sorrow, joy, we have family and tradition.\u00a0 But what ties the opera together?\u00a0 Our faith and love.\u00a0 Our faith that there is a beautiful all loving God who knows and loves us.\u00a0 We are all a part of this human opera. \u00a0And it is impossible to not participate.<\/p>\n<p>Out of all the complex discussions and readings, it can be boiled down to, &#8220;We can only know God through love&#8221;
