The <em>NMC Horizon Report<\/em> of both <a title=\"NMC Horizon Report &gt; 2011 Higher Ed Edition\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/acts\/2012\/10\/30\/a-little-bit-of-agile-a-dash-of-open-source-and-a-pinch-of-itil\/\">2011<\/a> and <a title=\"NMC Horizon Report &gt; 2012 Higher Ed Edition\" href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/Massive-Excitement-About\/134678\/\">2012<\/a> indicated that game-based learning is a growing trend in the classroom, and just within the past month, articles in the <a title=\"Show Me Your Badge\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/11\/04\/education\/edlife\/show-me-your-badge.html?pagewanted=all\">New York Times<\/a> and <a title=\"MOOC Mania\" href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/Massive-Excitement-About\/134678\/\">The Chronicle of Higher Education<\/a> highlight an element of gamification that may very well disrupt the entire paradigm of attending a school to earn a degree. This new element is the digital &#8220;badge,&#8221; a possible foundation for what might be called the &#8220;alternative credentialing&#8221; movement.<\/p>\n<p>This movement is serious business.\u00a0 The Mozilla Foundation has established the <a title=\"Open Badges\" href=\"http:\/\/www.openbadges.org\/en-US\/\">Open Badges<\/a> project, which, with support from the MacArthur Foundation, is defining the <a title=\"Open Badge Infrastructure\" href=\"http:\/\/www.openbadges.org\/en-US\/about.html#obi\">Open Badge Infrastructure<\/a>, a technology suite that can be used to build an ecosystem of badges.\u00a0 The <a title=\"Digital Media and Learning Competition\" href=\"http:\/\/dmlcompetition.net\/\">Digital Media and Learning Competition<\/a>, sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, awarded several grants to institutions such as Disney-Pixar and NASA to explore the concept of badges in life-long learning. Prominent Universities, including Duke, Purdue, and Carnegie-Mellon, are also experimenting with badges. And badges will probably play a significant role in the credentialing process of the now ubiquitous MOOCs.<\/p>\n<p>The question remains, of course, as to whether badges will ever be considered as valuable as a regular degree. The jury is out on that one, and probably will continue to deliberate on this issue for years, if not decades, to come.
