6. Will.I.Am: “Yes We Can”

Hope everyone had a great extended weekend. Here’s to will.i.am’s vastly popular video endorsement of Obama’s candidacy, a creative multi-layered mixing of Obama’s iconic speech with assorted testimonials. You can watch the video here.

Lyrical sample: “Yes we can to justice and equality./Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity.”

5. Big Boi ft. Mary J Blige: “Something’s Gotta Give”

What a fantastic convention – Obama and everyone supporting him (including Hillary, begrudingly) set an inspirational foundation for Democratic victory in November.

Speaking of inspiration, here is the song that inspired me to start collecting Obama hip-hop tracks. A heartfelt plea to change the economically stagnant conditions of the poor in America.

Lyrical sample: “And the only hope I have that help me deal with the drama, is that maybe in November I’ll be cheering for Obama.”

PALIN!?

To my intelligent and moderate Republican acquaintances, I apologize. We won’t get too presumptuous here, but it really looks like McCain is not running his campaign with anyone’s advice. Like the Bone Thugs & Akon song “I Tried”, lately, every time the Republican campaign takes 5 steps forward, it promptly then takes 10 steps back. Here’s to alienating the moderate faction of your fanbase, Mr. McCain:

“It’s like I’m taking 5 steps forward and 10 steps back/Tryin to get ahead of the game, but I can’t seem to get it on track/and I keep running away from the ones that say they love me the most/How could I create the distance when it’s suppose to be close.”

3. Chamillionaire: “The Evening News”

Chamillioniare deserves praise for dropping one of the earliest tracks to mention Obama, half a year before his campaign for the presidency kicked off. This single is hot off his sophomore disc, called Ultimate Victory, which happens to be, in my opinion, the greatest album released in 2007.

Lyrical sample: “The White House is going to stay white even tho’ we know Obama’s black/9/11 was a calculation, and some would say it was a timed attack.”

2. Nas: “Sly Fox”

Activist and social commentator Nas’s new album, Untitled, is chock-full of politically polarizing messages and imagery that don’t fail in placing present events in historically significant context. Hear the low-down on his highly publicized beef with FOX News and nemesis Bill O’Reilly in single “Sly Fox.”

Lyrical sample: “Don’t let the hype into your eyes and ear drum/Murder our own Fox not a team with Baracus/And he hates Barack because he march with the marches.”

1. Jay-Z: A Billi (Freestyle)

First up, Jay-Z’s freestyle “A Billi”, a remix of Lil Wayne’s “A Milli”.

Lyrical sample: “So raaahh, lick a shot for Barack Obama/ Change gon’ come or imma buy the whole hood lamas on me.” and…

“I’m signing off as the hood’s Barack.”

What better way to crown himself the king of hip-hop? More Jay-Z coming up this week.
